Cimbalom in Chapel Hill : Petra Berényi presented a program of music for cimbalom at Carol Woods Retirement Community on May 13, 2009. For some pieces, she was accompanied by Randall Love on piano. Anyone who thinks the cimbalom is just a gypsy folk instrument is seriously wrong. The program included transcriptions of Bach and Scarlatti and modern compositions for solo cimbalom by György Kurtág and Kamilló Lendway. Ms. Berényi is a gifted and accomplished musician, and she played with great skill and expressiveness. The photos were taken after the performance as she graciously demonstrated her cimbalom and answered questions for the enthusiastic audience. The camera was my new Canon 5D Mark II and Canon EF 24-105mm F4 IS lens. All photos were shot at ISO 4000 with available light.
